Review and Our celebration with Jim Gill

We ended our week with a concert from Jim Gill. We were all up dancing and singing. He put on quite a performance with the help of the kindergartners. Take a look at some of the pictures below.

Popcorn Words
This week we reviewed all of our popcorn words through various games. We played roll the popcorn word, we built them out of play dough and stamps, and searched for them in our readings.

We will continue to practice the tricky words here at school with the goal of knowing all 95 words fluently before summer.

Reading
This week in reading we read the book Fluffy the Porcupine. This book was very silly as Fluffy the porcupine is trying to be more "fluffy." He tries many unsuccessful ways of softening his appearance until he meets a rhino named Hippo. Hippo and Fluffy become best friends!

Our poem this week was about Tadpoles.

Math

In math we have continued practicing adding and subtracting within 5. We also challenged ourselves during center time to add and subtract within 10.  Many of us are becoming fluent with our math facts. Thank you for continuing to practice these at home. In our math centers we also practiced missing number. This was a skill we worked on a long time ago however many of us were showing signs of "forgetfulness." We made it fun with a golf themed center!

Our poem this week was about the month of May.

Our weekly reader this week was called "This land is your land." Inside of it we looked at the many different landforms and places in the United States. Many of us have traveled to more than one of these locations such as a beach, desert, mountain, river, and forests.

This week in reading we read the book Moon. In this story we learned interesting facts about the moon that circles the earth. Other planets have their own moons and some even have two or more moons. We also learned the vocabulary words visible and entire.

We also read several books about Ocean animals, as well as, practiced our ocean themed poem.

In the Ocean
I know a place that’s deep and blue
Tons of creatures swim on through
Great white sharks and electric eels
Jellyfish and elephant seals
In the ocean!
In the ocean!

Starfish, seahorses, and stingray
Swim about the sea all day
Octopus plunge in the sea
Gentle cow-like manatees
In the ocean!

Our weekly reader this week was describing a fish. Animals have to live in water, have gills, fins, and a backbone to make it a fish.

Math

In math we have continued practicing adding and subtracting within 5. In our centers we practiced fishing for numbers. Then we found the bigger number and subtracted the smaller number from it to find our answer. We also learned a trick using a rainbow to add numbers that equal 10.

Teacher Appreciation, Addition and Subtraction, ABC Countdown

Thank you for all of the wonderful surprises during teacher appreciation week. All of the notes, flowers and treats from the students were truly wonderful and made my week. I love teaching each and everyone of the students in my class. I can't believe how fast this year has already gone by.

We had fun with our first three days of the ABC countdown. Today was filled with compliments!

Happy Mothers Day to all the moms!

Here is what we did this week

Reading
This week in reading we read continued reading a nonfiction story called Getting Around by Plane. In this story we learned parts of an airplane, things it carries, places they fly, and about working on a plane. We learned four new fancy words. Those words included transportation, travel, land, and depart. Many of us had great connections to planes whether we had traveled on one before, are about to leave on a vacation for the first time on a plane, or would like to travel on a plane one day.

We continued our poetry unit this week with the poem "Picnic Guests"

Picnic Guests
Tune Over in the Meadow

Over in the meadow
Where the green grass grew
we spread our picnic lunch and
before we were through,
“Advance!” said the ant
“We’ll advance!” said his crew
and they scurried on our picnic

where the green grass grew.

Our weekly reader this week was all about how birds build different types of nests.

Math

In math we have continued practicing adding and subtracting within 5. In our centers we had our stamping station (which we practice subtracting from 10 for a challenge), we also manipulated math sentences through the use of linking chains and chips. We also quizzed friends on their math facts using dry erase boards. Continue to practice flashcards at home, even 5 minutes a day makes a huge difference in their fluency of facts.

Children's Museum, Bugs, adding and subtracting

Our field trip was a wonderful success and the students had great fun exploring the children's museum. They came back to share many wonderful details about their discoveries. We look forward to our next field trip to the zoo.

Here is our week in review:

Reading
We learned a lot of new things about bugs this week through our stories. We learned that bugs are made up of three body parts, the head, thorax, and abdomen. They also can have antennae (feelers), wings and 6 legs. Today we made bug headbands to celebrate everything we had learned. We got to pick a ladybug or bee.

We continued our poetry unit this week with the poem "Stung"

Stung!
Tune Itsy Bitsy Spider

Black and yellow bee
buzzes out into the sun
Sipping up his nectar ignoring all our fun.
I guess I didn’t see him.
I hiked on down the trail.
He stung my toe and don’t you know,

You should have heard me wail!

Our weekly reader this week was all about a caterpillars life cycle.

Math

In math we have continued practicing adding and subtracting within 5. We really focused on subtraction in the beginning of the week so that towards the end of the week when the signs were mixed it would be a little easier for us. We struggled a little with the mixing of signs as this is a difficult concept, however we will continue to practice this next week.

In the email I attached flashcards that can be printed and made to practice adding and subtracting within 5. If you prefer to just had write the problems, the document is helpful to see the problems the students are expected to master before first grade.

Important Reminders

May 7th- ABC Countdown begins (details will be sent home next week)
May 16th- Half Day
