Reading
During our reading time we read two books and then compared them. The first story was a nonfiction book called Winter Wonderland by Jill Esbaum. This book gave us facts about winter holidays, weather, and activities. While reading this book we learned the vocab words astounds hinge vanish, and gentle. The second story we read was called Snow by Cynthia Rylant. This story was a fiction story about a town on a snowy day. We compared fiction and non fiction story elements using these two books.

As an art project we made a picture of children catching snowflakes on their tongues. Did you know the snowflakes VANISH when they touch our tongues? We learned that they melted on our tongue as if they had disappeared.

Our weekly reader reviewed fiction and non fiction stories with us. Then we read our non fiction weekly reader about animals in the snow. We discussed where in the library we would check out books like Bearenstein Bears and Pete the Cat and books about Lizards, Cats, and other animals.

Math
In math this week we continued learning about subtraction. We focused on writing subtraction sentences and using simple story problems to solve subtraction stories. We learned the word difference and how it relates to the answer of a subtraction problem. We also learned about the equal sign. We know that subtraction sentences mean fewer items.

Important Reminders:

PBIS Book Drive starts on Tuesday and runs until the end of February. We are collecting books for Principal Lazar's previous schools summer  reading program. If you have gently used children's books that are no longer being enjoyed at home please consider donating them to students of Whitmere Elementary School in Rockford. Kindergarten- fifth grade students will benefit from these donations.

Reading
During our reading time we read the book Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. We listened to this story several times, but each time was different. The first time we listened to it we only heard the words as read by the author. We thought the book was funny and entertaining, then we drew pictures that we thought would go with the book (visualizing). The second time we listened to the book we heard a more serious voice as well as the pictures from the book. We felt the love in the story and even had a few friends crying because it had a more sensitive feel to it.

Our poem this week was called Freedom, Freedom. To go along with our poem this week we watched a movie, sang a song, and read some stories about Martin Luther King Jr. Here is the song we danced to in class if you are interested.

Martin Luther King Jr Song

Our weekly reader was about Martin Luther King Jr as well.

Math
In math this week we started subtraction. We have been focusing on words that describe subtraction such as take away, separating, and minus. We will continue to work on subtraction next week.

Reading
During our reading time we read the book The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant.  The book was about a family who gets a visit from their relatives from Virginia. We had many discussions about our own families and compared them to the family in the story. Many of us have relatives that live in different states than us as well as live in different countries. On Friday we listened to the story The Snow globe Family. Then we created our own snow globe scenes. Take a look at the process below. We used crayons to draw before we used water colors. Then we wrote sentences about our snow globes.

Our poem this week was called Grandmas and Grandpas.cit reminded us of our grandparents.

Our weekly reader was about Frozen City. This is a city made entirely out of ice in China each year for a festival. After reading we used critical thinking skills to determine if an item was frozen or meriting. Then we sequenced the steps it takes to build an ice city.

Math
In math this week we worked on addition. We practiced joining two groups/ numbers together. Then we learned that we can put a symbol between these groups that shows us to join the groups together called a plus sign. We also learned the meaning of an equal sign. We started to learn what addition sentence means. Next week we will continue to work on addition sentences.
