Next week: he, she, be

We are bringing home a sight word poem today called “Can You See a Rainbow” that reviews many of our words as well as one of our new words. This week we practiced our popcorn words using wikki sticks, snap cubes, and stamps.
Handwriting/ Writing
In writing this week we used our new January words to create a list of some of our favorite January words. We also used the words in this center to create a snowman picture and story. In our story we wrote details about our snowman. This project took several days, but we did a great job sounding out tricky words and using resources around the room to spell other words.
Reading
During reading we started a new unit. In this unit we are focusing on visualizing during reading. This week’s story, Cat’s Colors, was a review, however, we did not get to see the pictures. First we had to visualize the pictures using the words in the story, then we compared our pictures to the illustrators pictures.

Vocabulary we have learned: creature, imitate, companion, explore, generous, nuisance, energetic, exhausted, soar, tangled, snooze, drowsy, pedestrian, passenger, eager, assortment, enjoy, gooey, container, scrumptious, whirl, scramble, determined, proud, snatch, furious, comfort, welcome, allow, frustrated, decide, practice, filthy, slam, concerned, moan, observe, enormous, patient, scoop, uncomfortable, comfortable, cozy and straight.

We continued our poetry unit this week with the poem Arctic Animals. It was sung to the tune of Up on the Housetop.

Up in the Arctic where it is cold.
There are creatures to behold.
Foxes, wolves and polar bears
Caribous and Arctic hares
Oh! Oh! Oh! White as snow.
Oh! Oh! Oh! Where did they go?
Camouflaged in fur so light.
They disappear from our sight.
Math

This week in math we started looking at place value. We will continue to work on this next week because of the short week. We also searched our classroom for the number 17. We continued counting by 10s to 100 using various place value tools. Next week we will also start looking at shapes.
