Review of the week- September 9th

We made it through the first full week of school! Here is a peek into our week.

Phonics- We continued Jolly Phonics by learning the sounds for i and p. Our popcorn word this week connected with our phonics letter i because our word of the week was "I." This week we kept our "I" book at school to read during Daily 5.

Handwriting- This week in handwriting we got the wooden sticks out again. This time we created mat man. Mat man is a man made from the shapes we use to make letters. Then we practiced using the sticks to create many of our uppercase letters. Next week we will start our handwriting book.

Reading: We read a popular story called "If you Give a Mouse a Cookie" by Laura Numeroff. After reading we discussed different parts of the story including our favorite parts. Our vocabulary words this week were energetic, exhausted, and generous. We enjoyed sharing with our friends activities we need lots of energy for as well as activities that exhaust us.

During Daily 5 we were introduced to a new center that will make up the 5 centers. Last week we started "Read to Self". This week we continued practicing read to self and made our goal time of 10 minutes. We were introduced to "Listen to Reading" on Wednesday. During Listen to Reading students will be able to read books on CDs, a guest reader, or ebooks on the computer. This week we saw an electronic version of "If you Give a Mouse a Cookie" as well as a few books on CD.

Math- We continued practicing writing our numbers. This week we practiced 5-7 and reviewed 1-4. We also participated in centers this week with the Mouse (from the cookie story). In the centers we worked on counting cookies and matching it to the number. Additionally we put together number puzzles for 1-20 (again with cookies). We did a color by number of the mouse to review numbers 1-4.

Scholastic book orders are coming home today! There is a link on the side of the blog to log into scholastic if you are interested in ordering books. The books make great gifts and each purchase helps our class earn new books for our library! If you need the class code look at the top of the flyer sent home in the green folders.

Don't forget to turn in box tops! The class with the most box tops at the end of the year wins a class party.

The Magazine Drive has officially started. Don't forget to get those orders, every order supports the students of our school.
