Week of the 16th Review

Here is a review of our week:
Phonics- We continued Jolly Phonics by learning the sounds for n, c, & k. Our popcorn word this week was it.

Handwriting- This week in handwriting we got our handwriting books for the first time. We learned about frog jump letters and sang a song to help us remember we start with a big line at the top, bring it down, then jump back to the top to finish the letter. Then we practiced these letters. This week we had a chance to finish letters F, E, D, and P.

Reading: We read a story called "Cat's Colors" by Jane Cabrera.  We got to work in partners during this story time to discuss our predictions for Cat's favorite color as well as our favorite color. Our vocabulary words this week were soar, snooze, and drowsy.

During Daily 5 we continued practicing read to self and made our goal time of 10 minutes. We were introduced to "Listen to Reading" last week. So we practiced doing both in the classroom at the same time (more of a center setup). It was hard to keep our focus the first couple of days for the full 10 minutes, but by Friday we made it the full 10 minutes without stopping because of interruptions or distractions.

Math- We continued practicing our counting. We worked on counting objects up to 10. Today we brought home our counting books. We had to draw objects matching the number on the page. We also practiced putting math manipulatives with number tiles for one to one correspondence.

You might have seen our animal counting activity come home earlier this week. We put animals in order from 1-10 or 1-20 depending on our time. Then we colored them to coordinate with Cat's Colors.

Have you heard about "Brain Breaks?" Maybe not that word exactly but gummy bears, Mario, or One Direction might have come up. Brain breaks are a short break during our afternoon where we get in some movement. The students have the chance to pick from a choice board of songs/dances. Then we all get up and get the wiggles out. Afterwards we refocus for our next activities. Here is a snapshot.

Important Reminders:
The Magazine Drive has one more drop off date next week. Don't forget to get those orders, every order supports the students of our school. While we are not in the lead yet, we are not too far off.

Friday is a half day! Students will be dismissed at 12:00.

Scholastic book orders are due September 30th.

Don't forget to turn in box tops! The class with the most box tops at the end of the year wins a class party.

Any questions?? Email me!

Have a wonderful weekend!
