100th Day and Valentine's

We had a wonderful Valentine’s Day party today. Thank you to all of the parents who donated food, organized the activities, volunteer in the classroom, and helped their children get their valentines ready! The party was a great success and I know the students enjoyed celebrating their friendships!

Keep practicing these words as they continue to get more difficult. Ask your child how to practice the word using “nose” (while spelling each letter the student holds their nose)

Don’t forget the new tab at the top with ways to practice the popcorn words.

Handwriting/ Writing
At the writing center we worked on several stories this week involving the number one hundred. We took a couple of days to write what we would do with $100 and what we will look like and do when we are 100 years old. We had some very sweet friends who thought to donate their $100, we also had others buying castles, lots of pets, and friends who were going to buy 100 roses! When we are 100 years old some of us will have a “husband,” we are going to climb mountains, and eat a lot of cupcakes!

Reading
We have been practicing a new reading skill called “wondering.” While reading sometimes we wonder what will happen next, or about a characters feelings, or even why something has just happened. We are sharing these wonderings with our friends and teacher during story time. We read many valentine themed stories this week including Splat the Cat Funny Valentine, The Day it Rained Hearts, and An Awesome book of Love.

Vocabulary we have learned: creature, imitate, companion, explore, generous, nuisance, energetic, exhausted, soar, tangled, snooze, drowsy, pedestrian, passenger, eager, assortment, enjoy, gooey, container, scrumptious, whirl, scramble, determined, proud, snatch, furious, comfort, welcome, allow, frustrated, decide, practice, filthy, slam, concerned, moan, observe, enormous, patient, scoop, uncomfortable, comfortable, cozy and straight, doubtful, cautious

We continued our poetry unit this week with the poem Monster Love to the tune of: Oh my darling Clementine.

Oh my darlin’, oh my darlin’,
oh my darlin’ Valentine.
You are hairy and quite scary
but I want you to be mine.
Love your smile and your style,
And you smell of French fries.
You treat me oh so sweetly
When you bat your three big eyes!

Math
In math we continued working on addition to 5. We were also introduced to subtraction.  We will continue to use manipulatives and equations to understand how addition  and subtraction apply to our lives every day. In math centers this week we played an addition tic tac toe center. We also compared numbers in the classic card game “war.” We also did many 100th day counting activties. We worked on writing and counting our numbers up to 100. We read books about adding to 100 as well as sorting objects into piles of ten things (adding up to 100).
