Our week in review

Here is a review of the past two weeks: (sorry for the delay on last week)

Phonics
Our sounds of the week:
Sounds we know: s, a, t, i, p, n, ck, e, h, r, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v. y, x, oo, OO, ch, sh, ng, th, qu, ou, oi, ue, er, ar

We have officially finished the 42 sounds in the Jolly Phonics program. Next week we will start looking at the –at and –an word families.

Popcorn Words
This week we learned: look, good, jump
We read books and poems that included our popcorn words.
Words we know: a, I, it, in, see, big, my, like, up, run, at, on, we, me, am, did, not, is, can, but, to, too. little, and, yes, go, no, so,  the, you, down, he, she, be, our, here, out, get, help, now
Next week: will, have, must

Keep practicing these words as they continue to get more difficult. Ask your child how to practice the word with a “tigger bounce” (while spelling each letter the student bounces like Tigger)

I have placed a document in the email with additional ways to practice popcorn words. Also look up at the tab on the top of the page with suggestions (same).

Handwriting/ Writing
In handwriting we practiced lowercase letters t, a, d, g, i, and e . We also used the lowercase letters we have already learned to practice writing words like dog. At the writing center we got our new February writing cards. We are using these words to make lists, stories, pictures, and cards. We even noticed that some of our cards have words that we have practiced in Jolly Phonics (like statue) and have seen in books we are reading during daily 5.

Reading
We have been practicing a new reading skill called “wondering.” While reading sometimes we wonder what will happen next, or about a characters feelings, or even why something has just happened. We are sharing these wonderings with our friends and teacher during story time. We read the story A Letter to Amy by Ezra Jack Keats.

Vocabulary we have learned: creature, imitate, companion, explore, generous, nuisance, energetic, exhausted, soar, tangled, snooze, drowsy, pedestrian, passenger, eager, assortment, enjoy, gooey, container, scrumptious, whirl, scramble, determined, proud, snatch, furious, comfort, welcome, allow, frustrated, decide, practice, filthy, slam, concerned, moan, observe, enormous, patient, scoop, uncomfortable, comfortable, cozy and straight, doubtful, cautious

We continued our poetry unit this week with the poem Groundhog’s Day to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Groundhog, Groundhog
asleep and brown
Please wake up and look around
If upon the ground you see,
A shadows cast then it will be
Six more weeks of cold for all
No shadow’s an early thaw!

Math
In math these past two week we have been working on 3D shapes (sphere, cylinder, cube, and cone) as well as reviewing the 2D shapes we already know. This week we started our new unit on addition. We are working on adding up to 5. This will be a 6 week unit on addition and subtraction.

Important Reminders

February 13th- 100th Day (as long as we don’t have any more snow days) Please remember to have your child turn in their 100 hearts.

February 14th
Valentine’s Day party- please leave the “To” on the cards blank to help the students in when passing out their cards. We have 20 students in our class now.

We are running low on glue sticks. If anyone could donate a few extras we would be very happy. Thank you in advance!

If the weather is below 20 degrees with the wind chill we will not be going outside for recess!
